FAQs

Plastering in Manchester — your questions answered

Straight answers on timings, drying, prep and how we work.

Do you charge a day rate or quote per job?+

We quote per job rather than by the day, so the figure you agree is the figure you pay unless the scope changes. Everything is confirmed in writing before we start.

Can you skim over old plaster instead of replastering?+

Usually yes. If the existing plaster is sound and well bonded, a 2-3mm skim coat is the fastest way back to a smooth finish. If it is blown, hollow-sounding or damp, it has to come off first.

Do you plaster over wallpaper?+

No. Wallpaper must be stripped first, otherwise the paste re-wets and the new plaster loses its bond. We can strip it as part of the job.

How quickly can you start?+

Small repairs and single ceilings can often be fitted in within a week. Larger re-skims and damp work are typically booked 1-3 weeks ahead.

Do you do emergency or urgent plastering repairs?+

Yes — after leaks, ceiling collapses or insurance work we prioritise urgent repairs and can often attend within 24-48 hours across Greater Manchester.

What is the difference between skimming and plastering?+

Plastering is the broad trade term. Skimming is applying a thin 2-3mm finish coat over an existing sound surface or new plasterboard, while a full plaster job may include bonding, browning or a float-and-set base coat first.

How is plastering work in Manchester quoted?+

Every job is quoted individually after a site visit. What matters is the size of the room, ceiling height, access and how much prep or repair work is needed — so you get a fixed written quote rather than a rough figure over the phone.

How long does a room take to plaster?+

Most single rooms are skimmed in one day. A full house re-skim usually takes 3-7 working days, and damp proofing with replastering typically takes 2-3 days per affected wall.

How long before I can paint new plaster?+

Allow 3-7 days for fresh plaster to dry fully — longer in winter or on damp-proofed walls, which can need 2-4 weeks. Once it is a uniform pale colour with no dark patches, start with a mist coat of watered-down emulsion (roughly 70% paint, 30% water).

Do I need to move out while you plaster?+

No. We work room by room, sheet everything down and keep dust to a minimum, so you can stay in the property throughout. We only ask that the room being worked in is cleared of small furniture.
